Is it ok to ride english with western boots if im just taking lessons? Because I just bought some boots thinking I would be doing western but i decided on english because I want to start training for CTR and ETR. When Im ready I will buy english boots. Would it be ok to go ahead and wear the english breeches with western boots? or would that look to ridiculous?
Can we say ‘ouch’? Another reason for tall boots, beside not getting them caught under the flap, is to protect the legs against ’stirrup leather bites’. When those things separate, then come back together with a bit of your calf between them, it HURTS! Then when the ‘bite’ gets horse sweat in it, it keeps on hurting!
You can get a modest lace-up boot that won’t look out of place either western or English, and add half-chaps for English riding. I have ridden many miles in an AP saddle, including some cross country jumping, with paddock boots and no chaps. I’ve only had one stirrup leather bite – maybe because I keep some weight in the stirrups?
As far as looking ridiculous, I have competed in pair paces and other X-C wearing jeans and paddock boots and with a bosal hackamore on my horse’s head. She is very light to the rein, so I don’t need to use something strong, and I try to preserve her mouth for finer work than tearing around a X-C course. My friend and I won our division of a pair pace wearing tie-dye Tshirts and jeans on matching barefoot pintos. Hey, why not give them something to talk about! It’ll spice up their boring lives, with their look-alike brown horses and ‘uniforms’ – same clothes, same saddles, same bridles as each other.
